Everyone has to handle stress, but it should not control your life. When you become too stressed, it's important to take corrective action right away, as living with excessive stress for too long can have very real health effects. Here are a few effective stress coping techniques that will help you to regain control of your life.

Consider aromatherapy as a means to relieving some of your stress. Your olfactory senses are very intense. Scents that soothe or bring about a calming feeling, such as chamomile and lavender, are delivered straight to your brain, where your brain waves are signaled to relax. Surround yourself with such calming smells by lighting up a few scented candles.

Listening to your favorite music is an excellent technique of reducing your stress. We all know that music can have a therapeutic effect when we are stressed. Music that you enjoy releases serotonin in your body which is a natural mood booster.

Smile often, and you will not be as affected by stressful situations. Muscles used during the process of smiling activate the limbic system, which handles your emotions. Simply smiling will work to tilt the limbic system into a calmer state, and that is an excellent way to lower stress.

You don't want to complain to your friends all the time and become a burden. Talking about your problems once in a while is necessary, but do not place yourself at the center of the relationship. Your friends will be here to help if you need them, but you will drive them away by focusing on yourself constantly.
